Indie Sci-Fi Flick and Sundance Winner “Sleep Dealer” Looks Sweet

On this week’s Nerdbunker podcast, we discuss the complications of robots replacing the human workforce. But what if the robots were controlled by immigrant workers instead?

Check out this trailer for what looks like an incredibly unique indie sci-fi flick called Sleep Dealer. Not only does it feature a ton of robots, it looks like it’s injecting some sci-fi into the immigration debate.

Sleep Dealer and director Alex Rivera took home this year’s Alfred P. Sloan Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, an award presented to “an outstanding feature film focusing on science or technology as a theme, or depicting a scientist, engineer or mathematician as a major character.” The film also won Sundance’s Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award.

From Wired:

“I love gnomes and goblins and elves,” said Rivera, who’s made a name for himself touring museums and festivals with his award-winning shorts. “But what I’m really interested in is speculative fiction. I wanted to use this film to ask the question, ‘Where are we going?’”

Sleep Dealer has a limited release on April 17th, 2009 — I’ll be there. Let’s pack the theaters and support indie sci-fi!

Find out more about the film at the official website.
