Pulp Science: Minority Report Hands Free Computing!

A few months ago I blogged about Obscura Digital’s VisionAire, a multi-touch hologram workspace that seemed to get it’s inspiration from Speilberg’s 2002 Minority Report. While that interface was holographic and required specialized (and expensive) equipment, today’s entry in the hands free computing horse race uses a 3D camera and custom software that captures even small hand movements (and brings back the age old index finger/thumb gesture as gun!)

Mgestyk Technologies, the company behind the new technology, has not disclosed a price or release date, but it is taking orders at its website. They’ll also be at the Montreal International Game Summit on November 18-19, 2008. Check out the video below for a demo.

Doesn’t this look tiring? I mean, why ditch latency free keyboards and controllers for inprecise hand waving? Is it just because we can? Perhaps in situations when it is impractical to have a keyboard around (mobile devices), but for everyday home and office computing, I don’t see anyone reason to switch to an inferior contol mechanism… Unless you want to bust out the Jedi robes and feel like Obi-Wan while playing The Force Unleashed? (That I can understand.)

    OH!
Just when the best control technology came to fruition, it’s already been surpassed… Or at least on par.

You may want to check out the Emotive Headset.
Why move a muscle when you can think an attack ;)

Hey eksith — I wrote up a piece on the Emotiv back in February when it debuted in San Fran. Check it out: http://achievenerdvana.com/2008/02/21/mind-control-headset-gives-aspiring-cheneys-nerdgasm/

    Oops, nevermind then ;)

I saw this thing on a new Discovery channel show called “Prototype This”.
I figured “Oh great, just when I thought my dreams are being answered, I have new dreams.” :P

Haha! Isn’t it funny how our Nerdvana dreams are constantly updated with Moore’s Law?
