Rumors have been flying for months about the director for New Line’s Lord of the Rings prequel(s) The Hobbit. The latest name dropped has been Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo Del Toro. TheOneRing.Net seems to put it rest: according to Del Toro’s casting director and close friend, Guillermo will be directing the two prequel films! My first choice will always be Peter Jackson himself, but I really like the choice of Del Toro, and I definitely prefer him to the last rumored helmer, Sam Raimi…
Principal photography for the two films, which will be shot simultaneously, is tentatively set for 2009 — at $150 a piece. The release of the first installment is slated for 2010 and the second in 2011. Let the countdown begin!
